Have you ever had a day, week or a month where you feel like everything that has happened to you is out of your control? It seems like you have no choices because things are just happening to you. Well, my friends, I’m here to tell you that you do have choices and control when it feels and appears as if you have none.
What are some of the things you have control over? First of all, you have control over how you react to things that happen to you. You can CHOOSE to react negatively to a situation or you can CHOOSE to react with a mindset focused on action to get the situation under control. You can also do nothing. However, remember doing nothing is also a CHOICE.
We also have a CHOICE about how we think about things that happen to us. One CHOICE is we can become a victim and wallow in self-pity. Honestly, does that ever get us anywhere anyway? It becomes a vicious circle. Self-pity begets more self-pity and then we realize all the time we’ve wasted thinking about how we were “done wrong” and we are no longer moving ahead. Sometimes, we even take a step backward. Instead of drowning in self-pity and blame what if we looked at the same situation as a learning experience. What have I learned from this? What steps can I take so that it doesn’t happen again? What was my role in what happened? Thinking in this manner is thinking into the future vs wallowing in the past.
Lastly, we always have a CHOICE about how we act when it feels like things didn’t happen the way we wanted them to happen. Remember, people are watching. Your employees, customers, vendors, and especially your kids. You can scream, yell, pound the desk and blame everyone else. That’s one CHOICE. A better CHOICE is to take a deep breath (or ten) and head in the direction of finding a solution or learn something and move forward.
Remember you have CHOICES and CONTROL over how you react, think and act. If you make the choice to stay away from blame, excuses, and denial you will move forward faster. You will also teach those who are watching the right way to handle any situation.
